Retaining rings, also known as seger rings, are elastic metal rings used in the fixing and positioning of machine parts (shafts and bearings). They are inserted into a groove on the shaft or a bore-hole, serving as a guard against axial movement. They can also be inserted into the bearing housing. They are made of spring steel and the dimensions of the seger rings and grooves are standardised. The two most widely used seger ring standards are DIN 471 - external or shaft tappet and DIN 472 - internal tappet (for bores).
