Bevel gears are used to assemble gear sets or gear drives when the energy transfer is to be perpendicular to the shaft position and the gear axes intersect.

Bevel gears with straight teeth are used for low peripheral speeds, e.g. in cranes, hand cranes, etc. Bevel gears with bevel teeth are used for angular gearing of higher power and speeds, as they have a higher rate of meshing and run quieter.
