Megadyne EXTRA – wrapped V-belts with the MEGAMATCH system

all articles

One practical solution for such drives is Megadyne EXTRA wrapped V-belts. They are designed for light and medium-duty drives, so they cover a broad range of industrial, service and maintenance applications. In multi-belt drives, the MEGAMATCH system stands out because it helps match belts of the same profile and length correctly, even when they are not ordered as a prepared set.

WHAT DOES MEGAMATCH MEAN FOR MEGADYNE EXTRA BELTS?

MEGAMATCH is Megadyne’s dimensional matching system for V-belts. Belts marked MEGAMATCH are manufactured and supplied within set-matching tolerances defined by applicable international standards, including ISO 4184 and ARPM. This is important in multi-belt drives, where several belts must run on the same pulleys with an even load distribution.

In practice, this means that belts marked MEGAMATCH can be used without additional sorting, manual pairing or length measurement. When replacing multi-belt drives, it is therefore easier to combine belts of the same profile and length, while individual belts in the set show smaller deviations from one another.

The benefit of the system is most visible during service replacements, where belts may be supplied individually. The MEGAMATCH marking tells the customer that length deviations have already been controlled in production, making set selection for the same drive more transparent.

WHAT IS A WRAPPED V-BELT?

The term wrapped V-belt means that the outside of the belt is protected by a textile cover. This cover improves resistance to wear and external influences, while also contributing to uniform running in classic V-belt drives.

Megadyne EXTRA belt construction consists of three key parts: a rubber base (1), HT polyester cord tensile reinforcement (2) and a textile cover (3). The rubber base participates in power transmission, the tensile reinforcement limits belt elongation and the need for subsequent tensioning, while the textile cover also permits the use of a back-side idler or external guide.

MAIN TECHNICAL BENEFITS OF MEGADYNE EXTRA

Megadyne EXTRA belts are intended for users who need a reliable standard V-belt for everyday use. Their key benefits are:

  • Smooth start-up and uniform running
The belt helps dampen vibrations between the driving and driven pulley, contributing to quieter and more stable drive operation.
  • Wide speed and power range
They are used at different rotational speeds and across a broad range of drive loads, so they cover many industrial systems.
  • Precise MEGAMATCH length matching
Belts marked MEGAMATCH are manufactured within set-matching tolerances according to applicable international standards. In multi-belt drives, this reduces the need for additional sorting, measuring and pairing of belts before installation.
  • No lubrication and low maintenance
Unlike some other transmission systems, belt drives do not require lubrication. This simplifies maintenance and reduces the possibility of contamination around the machine.
  • Long service life
The combination of rubber compound, tensile cords and protective cover contributes to longer use when installation is correct, tension is appropriate and pulleys are aligned.
  • HT polyester cord tensile reinforcement
High tensile strength limits belt elongation during operation and reduces the need for additional tensioning after the initial running-in of the drive.
  • Antistatic properties
Megadyne EXTRA belts have antistatic properties according to ISO 1813, which is important in environments where the risk of electrostatic charge must be reduced.
  • Operating temperature range from –30 °C to +80 °C
The belts are used in different working environments, from colder areas to applications with moderately elevated temperatures.

PROFILES AND VERSIONS

The Megadyne EXTRA range includes classic wrapped profiles Z, A, B, C, D and E, as well as narrow wrapped profiles SPZ, SPA, SPB and SPC. Classic profiles cover widths from 10 to 40 mm, while narrow profiles range from 9.7 to 22 mm, so the range covers a broad set of standard power transmission needs in industry and maintenance.

The Tw and Th values indicate profile width and height in millimetres, while the Angle column indicates the groove angle in degrees. For classic profiles, the nominal measurement is Li; for narrow profiles, it is Lp.

Megadyne belt profile

Profile selection depends on several factors: drive power, pulley diameter, speed, centre distance, available space and operating conditions. When replacing an existing belt, it is important to check the profile designation, length, pulley condition and tensioning method. For classic D and E profiles, the pulley diameter and available space in the drive should be checked carefully because of the larger cross-sections.

The mmintercom.com range also includes versions such as SPZ 1637 LP EXTRA, SPZ 1250 LP EXTRA and B 65.0: 17 x 1650 Li EXTRA, showing a practical selection of different lengths and profiles for standard drives.

WHAT TO CHECK WHEN SELECTING AND INSTALLING?

Even a high-quality belt cannot work correctly if the drive is not properly prepared. Before replacing the belt, it is recommended to check:

  1. Pulley condition
Worn, damaged or incorrectly aligned pulleys cause faster belt wear, vibrations and poorer power transmission.
  2. Correct tension
A belt that is too loose can slip, overheat and wear. A belt that is too tight places additional load on bearings, shafts and pulleys.
  3. Matching profile and length
An incorrect profile or unsuitable length can cause improper seating in the pulley groove, lower efficiency and a shorter service life.
  4. Operating conditions
Temperature, dust, moisture, chemicals and the load pattern affect the choice of the correct belt type. In more demanding conditions, it is advisable to check whether the standard version is suitable or whether a special version is required.
