Wide Range of O-Ring Seals for Industry, Hydraulics and Food Applications

At M&M Intercom, we provide premium O-ring seals, among the most widely used and reliable sealing elements in industry. Thanks to their simple geometry and circular cross-section, O-rings are highly adaptable and suitable for static applications.
Our range includes more than 4,800 different versions, enabling precise adaptation to dimensions, operating media, temperatures and pressures. In addition to standard O-ring seals, we also offer:

  • O-ring cords for custom-made seals
  • O-ring kits for service and maintenance needs
  • backup rings for O-rings to prevent extrusion at higher pressures

With a wide selection of dimensions, materials and hardness levels, we provide solutions for nearly every application.

Advantages of O-Ring Seals Compared to Other Sealing Systems

O-ring seals are popular due to their combination of simplicity and efficiency. Key advantages include:

  • easy installation
  • low cost
  • wide temperature range
  • suitability for static applications
  • minimal maintenance requirements

The symmetrical shape allows single- or double-acting sealing, offering greater flexibility in groove design.

O-Ring Materials for Different Media and Temperatures

Material selection is crucial for long service life. Our range includes various elastomers and specialty materials:

  • NBR (nitrile rubber) – resistant to oils and fuels
  • FPM (Viton) – high chemical and temperature resistance
  • EPDM – excellent resistance to water, steam and weathering
  • VMQ (silicone) – wide temperature range and good elasticity
  • HNBR – enhanced mechanical resistance
  • FFPM – extreme chemical resistance
  • FEP/FPM and FEP/VMQ – encapsulated O-rings for aggressive media
  • PTFE – low friction and high chemical resistance

For special applications, versions with surface treatments, lubrication or special coatings are also available.

O-Ring Seals for the Food and Pharmaceutical Industry

An important part of our range includes O-ring seals for food industry applications, compliant with FDA, NSF61 and European Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004. Peroxide-cured EPDM O-rings and encapsulated versions for food contact are also available.

These products provide:

  • safety in food contact applications
  • resistance to cleaning agents and steam
  • compliance with international regulations

This enables use in food processing, pharmaceutical and chemical industries.

Dimensions, Hardness and Precision

O-ring seals are available with internal diameters from 0.1 mm up to 1,240 mm and more, with various cross-section thicknesses. This wide range enables precise adaptation to almost any groove geometry.
Hardness ranges from 15 ShA to 90 ShA, with 70 ShA being the most common choice, offering a balanced combination of elasticity and mechanical resistance.
Proper selection of dimension and hardness directly affects:

  • sealing reliability
  • resistance to extrusion
  • longer service life
  • stability at higher pressures

For high-pressure applications, the use of backup rings is recommended to prevent deformation and extrusion of the seal.

O-Ring Cords and Custom Manufacturing

For non-standard dimensions or larger diameters, we offer O-ring cords that allow production of custom-made seals. With precise joint manufacturing, functional sealing solutions can be created even for special applications.
This is particularly useful for:

  • large industrial housings
  • service interventions
  • restoration of older equipment
  • non-standard grooves

Application of O-Ring Seals in Various Industries

Due to their versatility, O-ring seals are used across many sectors:

  • hydraulics and pneumatics
  • automotive industry
  • energy sector
  • mechanical engineering
  • chemical industry
  • food and pharmaceutical industry

Their adaptability enables use in low-pressure systems as well as demanding applications with higher temperatures and aggressive media.

Frequently Asked Questions About O-Ring Seals

1. What are O-ring seals and how do they work?
O-ring seals are elastomer sealing elements with a circular cross-section, designed to seal between two mating surfaces. When installed, they are slightly compressed in the groove, creating sealing pressure between surfaces. Under system pressure, the seal is further pressed against the groove walls, improving sealing performance. Due to their symmetrical shape, they are suitable for static and certain dynamic applications.
2. How to select the right O-ring material?
Material selection depends on the medium, temperature, pressure and chemical exposure.

  • NBR O-rings are suitable for oils and fuels.
  • EPDM O-rings are resistant to water, steam and weathering.
  • FPM (Viton) provides high temperature and chemical resistance.
  • VMQ (silicone) offers a wide temperature range.
  • FFPM is intended for extreme chemical applications.

Incorrect material selection may cause swelling, cracking or premature wear.
3. What is the difference between 70 ShA and 90 ShA hardness?
Hardness influences elasticity and resistance to deformation. 70 ShA O-rings are the most common choice and provide a good balance between flexibility and sealing performance. 90 ShA O-rings are harder and more suitable for higher pressures where there is a risk of extrusion from the groove.
4. Are O-ring seals suitable for dynamic applications?
Yes, but with certain limitations. O-rings can be used in rotary or reciprocating movements; however, movement speed, lubrication and material must be considered. For demanding dynamic applications, backup rings or specialized seals are often used.
5. What are encapsulated O-rings and when should they be used?
Encapsulated O-rings (FEP/FPM or FEP/VMQ) have an elastomer core covered with a PTFE layer. They are suitable for aggressive chemical media where standard elastomers are insufficient. They are frequently used in chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
6. Are O-ring seals available for food applications?
Yes. O-ring seals with FDA certification, NSF61 approval and compliance with (EC) No. 1935/2004 are available. These are suitable for contact with food, drinking water and pharmaceutical products. Peroxide-cured EPDM O-rings are particularly common.
7. How to determine the correct O-ring dimension?
The dimension consists of the internal diameter and cross-section thickness. It is important to accurately measure the groove or old seal and consider tolerances. Incorrect sizing may cause leakage or excessive wear. For higher pressures, the use of backup rings should also be evaluated.
8. What are backup rings for O-rings?
Backup rings are additional elements installed next to the O-ring to prevent extrusion from the groove at high pressures. They are mainly used in hydraulic systems and applications with higher mechanical loads.
9. How long do O-ring seals last?
Service life depends on material, temperature, pressure, medium and correct installation. With proper selection and installation, O-ring seals can function for many years without replacement.
10. Is it possible to manufacture custom O-ring seals?
Yes. Using O-ring cords, seals of non-standard diameters can be produced. This solution is particularly useful for large industrial applications or restoration of older equipment where standard dimensions are unavailable. Precise joint manufacturing is essential for reliable sealing. At the M&M machining center, we produce standard and special custom-turned seals.
